Tim TEbow: the future of an NFL QB…

That New England Patriots are in a troubling spot regarding the Tight End position.  Lets look at their options that have starting potential.

So who can the Patriots turn too? TEbow. Is there a coincidence that his name is TEbow? The incredibly lucky Patriots can make this work. They took a late round QB and made him one of the greatest of all time. They had a LB corp of has beens and never was and made them the cornerstone of 3 Super Bowl championships. LB Mike Vrabel was one of Tom Terrific’s favorite receivers at TE.  We can see it now, Belichick  puts his arm around TE-bow and says: “Tim, we have a problem, Ballard is not ready to go, Gronk is out until October and we are working on getting the media to remember not to report when our guys break the law; who would have guessed murder is so hard to cover up? Anyway,  you think you could fill in for a few games until we are back at full strength?” Of course TE-bow will say yes and he will miraculously turn into one of the great TE of the modern era. That is the patriot way; do shit that shouldn’t work and get the chiefs to give you a 2^nd round pick for Matt Cassel and watch them make him THE HIGHEST PAID QB IN THE LEAUGE.  Too bad Pioli didn’t know that it only works in Boston.

Kansas City Sports

While researching our previous article on women's basketball. We were awakened to an entire world of lingerie sports. Football, arena football, basketball, Hockey!!!. As entertaining as it was to examine the...ahem...merits of the athletes we found a team name intriguing. In the LLFL there is a team called the Kansas City Tease. This got us thinking. All Kansas City Sports franchises should change their nickname to the Tease. It is the perfect name for the hell these teams put us through year after year.

Womens Basketball...

The debate rages on throughout the sports world, how to make women's sports more popular? With the lone exceptions of beach volleyball and tennis; men's sports dominate. The Big Scary Editor and I were debating solutions to the issue when we asked the obvious question why do men watch those two sports and not other.

Men are the driving force behind sports on TV. Middle-aged fat white men to be specific. If your sport cannot draw with enough action then it has to feed into the fantasy of that man. Or, you have to give him a reason to care.

After some research we found that there is a profitable lingerie football league as well as various other sports tied to scantly clad women. Do I even have to ask why you think men are watching them? The funny thing is; the ladies of these leagues take the sport serious and are competitive. Look at the LBL. Look at the videos and the player bios. These women know how to play ball. They seem to be good.  

Let me be clear on one point. Women's leagues will never compete on the same level as men's. they can be equally skilled but athleticism will win out in the end. So, promote the fact they are females. Instead of dressing them like men (WNBA) and show off the female form. Sex sells. Would I want my daughter playing beach volleyball in those itsy-bitsy-teeny little bikinis? If that is what she wanted to do. Its not exploitation. 

And don't give me people should watch for skill and athleticism. All things being equal you will see more skill and far superior athletes in the NBA than you will in the WNBA. The average starting NBA player would dominate in the WNBA.    

If they want, let the ladies market what makes them special. Change the uniforms, some spandex; form hugging outfits. Tennis players sit on there millions of dollars in short skirts. Let the ladies design a new uniform that allows them to be as dangerous as they want to be. People will start watching!

 

MLB rookie of the year?

Yasiel Puig Has the sports world a buzz with his debut in a Dodgers uniform.  This is the type of guy MLB has been dying for, a real athlete. He has been so good that in just a week people are already discussing him as MLB rookie of the year. I have heard arguments that he should not be considered as he was a pro-baseball player in Cuba for four years before defecting. Not a real argument. There have been others who have played in Japan, Cuba and the Negro League (What? You don't want to count Jackie Robinson??) and were named ROY (rookie of the year).

Having said that, we agree that Puig should not be ROY. Not because of his age, not because of his previous affiliations in baseball. Puig is playing in the wrong sport. He is a football player playing baseball. You have seen the comparisons to Bo Jackson. Bo was a football player playing baseball. If Puig was born in south Florida he would have gone to the U and be playing middle linebacker for Baltimore.

It just is not fair to all the other players in MLB who are not athletes to hold them to the standard of a football player.

Top 5 QB in the NFL...

We were inspired by Joe Montana's TWEETS to provide our own list of the top five QB’s playing today. Joe listed six as his top five and we thought, “hey here is a chance to do something better that JOE MONTANA!!

So here it is

1.       (Tie) Aaron Rodgers, Drew Breeze-With one Super Bowl Win under the belt he has a command of his offense and a mastery of the game no one else can rival.

2.       (tie) Payton Manning, Tom Brady-fallen a step off from his heyday but veteran presence and caginess counts a lot here. There is not much he hasn’t seen.

3.        (tie) Joe Flacco, Eli Manning-Whatever problems he has had during the regular season it all goes away in the play-offs where all he does is seem to win. Flash me that Super Bowl MVP

4.        (tie) Matt Ryan, Tony Romo- no denying his talent, great regular season numbers but somehow cannot deliver in the post season. Still Talent makes him higher than others.

5.       (tie) Jay Cultler, Philip Rivers-Immensely talented and he is still more polished passer than RG3, Cam, Luck and Wilson (right now) but that could change by the end of the season. If he doesn’t make the next step this year he will be lucky to be in the top ten next year let alone the top 5.

6.       Honorable mention-Ben Roethlisberger perhaps second only to Brady in accomplishments but he is not an elite passer. We have yet to see that he can carry a team without a great running game and elite defense. A deep playoff push this year could vault him back into the top 5.

UPDATE: The big Scary Editor was confused over the inclusion of Big Ben in this mannor. The joke is we do not think he belongs in the same grouping as the rest. Now if this was the top five O linemen then he would be right up there with Jamarcus Russel

Arrowhead half-empty: The realist view of the Chiefs season

This has been one of the most questionable off-seasons in recent years. You would be hard pressed to convince me that there are not many areas of concern the Chiefs have not addressed outright ignored or made worse. Yes six pro bowlers are returning but what help have we given them.

Coach: Andy Reid not only has never won “the big one” but he has squandered some of the most talent collections of players any one team has had in recent memory. The chiefs also have big questions and OC and DC.

GM: Almost any move here would have been an upgrade; however there were many proven guys available. Unfortunately we were hel bent on hiring Reid so we had to get a GM who would play second fiddle.

QB: Smith is leaps and bounds better than ANYTHING we have had here in years. But he was widely regarded as a bust before the last two years in SF. He is oft-injured and we gave up ALOT to get him. If we get marginal plaay out of him and go .500 this year we are on the hook for ANOTHER 2^nd rd. Daniels is talented college QB but has never proven he could contribute in the pros. He was redrafted and the QB starved Redskins didn't keep him. The Saints showed no interest in bringing him back either. In fact the seemed desperate this off-season to upgrade. Stanzi doesn't seem to have a future and Bray, though huge talent and potential, is immature and a head case.

O line: Wasted the first overall pick on a RT. It hurts to write that. Never in league history has any team done that. And Fisher is a project to boot. We have questions at guard and center and it doesn't look like we did much to upgrade.

WR: Bowe is back, that is the only positive of this group. Baldwin is a good practice guy and nothing more. Dexter has yet to find a role or produce consistently. There is nothing more here to work with.

RB: Charles is amazing and nothing else. Past back-ups have never contributed and we wasted a pick on prospect Davis. He had one good year since his sophomore year in high-school. Their were so many better RB in the draft when we used a pick on a guy who will be lucky to make it out of the pre-season healthy. For some reason Reid is serious about this upgrading the FB, a position he almost has never used in the past and is about non-existent in pistol formations. We used a draft pick and traded a decent CB prospect as well as bringing in a FA. Only one guy is going to stick and we will have wasted a lot here.

TE: Moeaki is back but he won't make it a whole year. Everything else here is unproven projects.

D Line- We lost or best lineman and possibly or best defender when Dorsey left for a contract we could have easily matched. He went to a 34 team so that was not a consideration. Jackson is a bust and Poe and Powe are unproven and projects. DeVito seems like a good pick up, but the Jets would have kept him if he is as good as fans say he is.

LB-Only Inside LB needed help. And we did next to nothing to upgrade the position. We lack depth and the guy we drafted wasn't even a starter in college. One injury here and we have huge problems. If the D-line cannot play better than last year Hali and Houston will be handled easily.

DB: Was a weakness last year and they were upgraded but with old men we would be lucky to get a year or two out of. We got rid of young prospects and seemed to be rolling the dice here.

K: AS good as these guys are I would have liked to seen some challenge here or at least a new long snapper.

There you have it. This year seems to be a big roll of the dice. A lot of things have to break just right. We haven't built a contender but rather tried to gamble on the Pro-Bowl players we have and a bunch of Maybes

This has been one of the best off-seasons in recent years. You would be hard pressed to convince me that there is not one area the Chiefs have not gotten better at.

Coach: Even though Andy Reid has never won “the big one” he is the best coach since Vermil and I would put him a step above Marty.

GM: Almost any move here would have been an upgrade.

QB: Smith is leaps and bounds better than ANYTHING we have had here in years. Daniels is talented and should prove to be a capable backup. He wasn't drafted but mainy that was because of his size. There are more shorter guys in the league now proving it is ok not to be 6' 4''. He is the most mobile QB on the roster. Bray comes in with an absolute Cannon for an arm, he is a project but he has first round talent.

O line: Best tackle in the draft, Albert is coming back and many of the wounded should be back while their replacements all got game experience. Our depth has never been better.

WR: Bowe is back, this id the year Baldwin will break out. He is finally in a system that can utilize his skill set. There is a lot of potential after the starters, and there could be a few break out stars.

RB: Charles is amazing and we have a Intriguing prospect in Davis. Reid is serious about this group as can be seen in the amount of resources he has devoted to finding a capable FB, not just a lead blocker but a Tom Rathman type who can do everything.

TE: Moeaki is back and we have interesting prospects from the draft and FA. Doubtful any of them will reach Tony's platitudes but who will. We don't need hall of fame here just clutch.

Defense: gone is the bend don't break style we have had since Gunther was head coach. We are moving to an aggressive style in the vein of the NY, Baltimore attacking defense. Maybe we will see some production out of our high D-line picks

D Line- Upgrades across the line. DeVito brings experience and talent in the new defense. Poe and Powe are each a year better and are as big and strong as any tackle in the league.

LB-Only Inside LB needed help. There has not been a person at this spot beside Johnson who was not just a worm body sense the switch to a 34. Drafting Nico Johnson fills this void and ther is good depth behind him. Nico doesn't have to be a three down guy. This position is off the field in nickle and dime anyway.

B: Was a weakness last year and now it may be the strongest part of the team. The addition of Smith, Robinson and Demps is beyond good any one of those guys would have been a major haul as it stand two of them won't be starting!

K: the only place where ther were no changes and frankly we are fine here. I long for the days when the team was so stellar that we could focus on bad kicks as why we may have lost one or two games in a year.

There you have it. Optamism abounds over a roster overhaul like this! Go Chiefs.

Shame on you baseball...Maybe

Today Barry bonds and Roger Clemons are both to be voted on for the hall of fame. They are two of the greatest players to ever play the game. If they are not inducted then no player from 1987 to 2006ish should be considered. All players from this era used all kinds of chemicals including steroids. Speed was huge during this time as well. the players who are not linked to roids or other PED's from this era never put numbers up that would be considered hall worthy in any era. So if the two best of this era don't go in then no one should. And if they don't go in baseball should be ashamed of itself.

Why the Chiefs Sucking hurts so much…

I was thinking, this is not the first time the chiefs have sucked. In fact, there have been years past where the efforts by some teams were even more futile. There were teams that had fewer talented players and less hope of having a good season. So why is this so upsetting to us, so called, die-hard chiefs fans? I thought for a moment that maybe it was because our expectations were so high at the beginning of the season and the are so bad. No, I don’t think so. We are Kansas City sports team fans; disappointment comes with the territory.

We have a theory…nay…the answer. Parody. Parody is killing the league and  hurting fans. Why? More like how? How can a set-up of teams built to ensure competitiveness be a bad thing? How can it hurt fans; making sure your team can go worst to first in any given year. It is simple, there are no good teams. Every team is just ok, and each weak you could make an argument that any team could beat the other no matter what the record. So, when your team can’t beat teams built for your team to beat; well it sucks.

It never seemed to be that hard to watch the great Steelers teams come in and get a win or the Giants in the 80’s or the 49ers.  Even the Cowboys of the 60’s, 70’s, and 90’s. When teams like that came in it was known to even the most average fan that a win will be unlikely at best. I remember when those great Bills teams in the early 90’s would come to Arrowhead. Chiefs fans knew that if there was a win it would be a real battle. There were just games on the schedule that seemed unlikely wins at best; honest fans chalked them up as losses. But we all still went to the games to cheer. Partly because we hoped they would win, but also to see our team go head to head with the best to see how we measured up.

We no longer have that. There is no one dominant team that losses are upsets to them and each week they are favored to win. The Patriots are closest, only their defense is awful and when they loose no one is really surprised. This is also why this league is impossible to predict. Oh, you can listen to the experts each week but when it comes down too it, they know as little as we do. The expert picks are around .500 at best.

Now in the days of parody your team, our team, has no excuse to lose. Every loss was an expected win. Every blow out loss was an unacceptable performance. Every team sucks so the Chiefs should win. And they continue to fail. Parody destroys greatness and exceptionalism. It has too, you can’t make everything great. You can only make everything average.

Unfortunately in a league of average our Chiefs can’t compete…

We at SCM sports don't follow the average joe sports. You know the sports where anybody can participate. Even those who have no chance of competing. Normally, we just don't have the time to mess with who dominated a marathon of average people who months ago could not get off the couch. Hey, good for them, I am glad the have done something. But then we saw this guy:

He ran a marathon in flip-flops. We have three words for you sir...

The Cassel Situation...

I was watching the Chiefs play the Crows…ahh…Ravens and the Chiefs under-performing QB was injured on a play.  The fans cheered. I mentioned to the missus that it was a low class move to cheer when a guy is hurt; its bad enough when it is an opposing player but it is just wrong when it is your own guy. Matt Cassel is not a good starting QB, but he is one tough SOB. He rushed back from appendix surgery to play. Then n came the press conference. The Chiefs starting right tackle, Eric Winston, ripped into the fans. He made allusions to being embarrassed by them (Which is a backhanded way of saying he is embarrassed by being a Chief) and that it was disgusting. He is right, however he did not stop there. He continued to say that they are not gladiators and that they will live shorter lives because of there chosen profession. He said he was not asking for sympathy but pointed out that we should not cheer when guys get hurt as it represents the shortening of their lives.

OK, If he wasn’t asking for sympathy there is no reason to bring it up. I was supporting him until that moment. How many fans won’t live to see there 60th birthday because of their chosen profession? KC PD officers get to retire after 15 years do to the hazardous and stressful conditions they work under. In those 15 yeasr they will be lucky to get near the amount of money you earned in one year Mr. Winston. You sir get $900,000 dollars for this year; if an officer averages $54,000 and if they worked for 15 years it would be around $810,000. Of course you got that $2,000,000 signing bonus for this year. In 5 years you will earn $22 million. Is your life more valuable that a longshoreman? A coal miner? How many Pennsylvania coal miners root for the Steelers every weekend? How many guys working in the steel mills root for the Steelers? 
How abut those factory workers in Kansas City who will live shorter lives due to the conditions they work?

Mr. Winston you have a skill that is marketable that will give you millions of dollars. You work in a relatively safe profession. How many pro football players died in the last 15 years on the job? I can only think of one. How many soldiers have died in the same time-frame? Police? Firefighters? Fisherman? Miners? Construction workers?

So, when a truck driver who spends thousands of dollars each year in season tickets, parking, concessions and merchandising just to have something to cheer for in an otherwise mundane existence cheers when a millionaire is hurt and the back-up gives him a ray of hope then I say let him. He doesn’t need to be preached at by some self righteous RT who hasn’t lived up to his contract and is part of the reason the fans are as frustrated as they are. Its Just Sickening to have to listen to you tell us what we have the right to do when it costs us so much.

What Killed Baseball...

Back in the Nineties we used to enjoy the occasional baseball game. We kind of liked it when, during Sports Center, you would see KC played NY and you would have to double check what day it was to see if it was a football score or baseball. Guys were breaking records and the baseballs became hot commodities. Of course that was when the guys who were breaking the records looked like this:

Even more records fell and games were exciting. all was bliss for sports fans; that is until this Guy:

We firmly believe that people were so eager that this guy not be the face of baseball that they went after him with both barrels and in the process exposed the rampant steroid usage and took the offense out of baseball.

Some people argue that Barry just rubbed people the wrong way; that he is just a jerk. Well so is McGwire.

WE hate people who pull the race card for every little thing, but there is no way around it. the red headed freckled guy had a great record and the surly black man broke it. If you think we are lying, McGwire lied to congress and has a job in baseball now. 

Barry broke the record, no team would sign him and was convicted of obstruction of justice based on him lying to federal prosecutors even though they could not convict him of lying due to lack of evidence.


Now baseball is back to 'pitchers duals' and sports writters all across America lament about the 'Steroid Era'. while we are stuck with boring games and good naps. 


BTW: Many people still support Lance Armstrong. several polls say he did not cheat. people cite the 500 blood tets without a positive test.
